At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Health Science and Technology, one or more positions or tenure track assistant professors in Immunology and/or medical microbiology are open for appointment from October 1st, 2026, or soon thereafter.
At Department of Health Science and Technology we conduct research, teaching, and innovation within biomedicine, engineering, sports science, public health, neuroscience, psychology, and physiotherapy to develop sustainable technological solutions. We offer bachelor’s and master’s degree programs within medicine, medicine with industrial specialization, biomedical engineering, sports science, public health, and clinical health and technology. Our graduates contribute to setting the agenda for future needs and solutions for increased public health and implementation of new health knowledge and technologies.
Currently, our department has approximately 230 employees, 70 Ph.D.-students enrolled in the Doctoral School in Medicine, Biomedical Science and Technology, and 1,900 students in our bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. Research Profile
We seek candidates holding a PhD degree in medicine, biomedicine, veterinary medicine, or a related field, with a strong research profile within:
- Immunology (e.g., dendritic cell biology, host–immune interactions, immunotherapy, cancer vaccines, STING signalling, vaccine development),
and/or
- Medical Microbiology (e.g., microbial pathogenesis, infectious diseases, virus research, antibiotic resistance, microbe–host interactions, microbial treatment in clinical settings).
The successful candidate will join the Medical Microbiology and Immunology research group, which focuses on microbial pathogenicity, host–immune interactions, antibiotic resistance, and vaccine development.
The department is well equipped for advanced experimental research, including:
- Cell culture and molecular biology laboratories
- Protein analysis and cloning facilities
- Classified microbiological laboratories
- Light, fluorescence, confocal and electron microscopy
- Mass spectrometry
- Rodent facilities
Candidates may contribute to existing research areas or establish an independent research profile within the group.
The position includes research-based teaching primarily within the Medicine programme, but also potentially within other bachelor’s and master’s programmes at the department.
Teaching is based on Aalborg University’s Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model and includes:
- Lectures
- Case-based teaching
- Laboratory courses
- Workshops
- Project supervision
- Examination and assessment (including external censoring)
Bachelor-level teaching is primarily conducted in Danish, but teaching and supervision in English are possible. Non-Danish-speaking candidates are expected to learn Danish within the first years of employment.
Tenure-track assistant professors are offered employment for a six-year period during which they must acquire qualifications at the associate professor level. At the end of the period, the assistant professor transfers to employment as an associate professor, following positive assessment. Promotion to associate professor is thus based solely on the staff member's own results and not on competition with other candidates.
As a tenure track assistant professor you are expected to conduct research (50%) and teaching (50%). Later, as an associate professor you are also expected to conduct both research (40%) and teaching (60%).
As a tenure track assistant professor you are expected to:
- participate in drawing up your individual tenure-track career plan, including both research and teaching career goals, which should be followed
- teaching: complete the course in university pedagogy for assistant professors
- research: work on attracting external funding
- non-native Danish speaker: learn Danish
For the level of ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, the following criteria will apply:
To achieve merit at assistant professor level, we expect that the candidate has qualifications corresponding to an acquired Ph.D. degree. We expect that the candidate:
- has published in peer-reviewed journals as the first author of the publication
- has experience with applying for external funding for projects, equipment, travel costs, etc., possibly as main applicant (PI) or co-applicant (co-PI). This will be an advantage
- is able to conduct teaching, exams, and quality assurance, either independently or under supervision of a senior colleague
- has experience with presentation of science, e.g., at conferences or in other relevant forums
- has experience with sharing knowledge through an open science practice. This will be an advantage
- can work both independently and contribute positively to teamwork in a research group
- is able to conduct teaching and supervision in English or Danish. If the primary language is not Danish, the candidate is expected to learn Danish within the first few years of the employment
- will be able to contribute to teaching within the department’s bachelor and master programs
To be promoted to the level of ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, the following criteria will apply:
To achieve merit at associate professor level after 4-6 years as tenure track employee, we expect that the candidate will have experience with teaching, research or innovation, and knowledge dissemination. The candidate should be able to demonstrate significant contributions within ‘research or innovation’ or ‘teaching or education’. We expect the candidate:
- demonstrates potential to establish an individual research profile and independent research area
- can document significant contributions within his/her own research area or within innovation. This may be through data collection, data curation, programming, modelling, experiments, open science, development, cooperation with companies, or other activities which may result in publications, patents, receipt of external funding, or the like
- has experience with applications for external funding as main applicant (PI) or co-applicant (co-PI) has experience with national and/or international research cooperation or establishment of a network. This will be an advantage
- should independently be able to carry out teaching, exams, and quality assurance
- has experience with presentation of science, e.g., at conferences or in other relevant forums
- has experience with sharing knowledge through an open science praxis. This will be an advantage
- has experience with project management and teaching administration. This will be an advantage
- has social and collegial competences the candidate able to interact with and contribute to a research group as well as the research and teaching environment at the department in a constructive manner
- is able to conduct teaching and supervision in English and Danish.
If the tenure track assistant professor fails to request that their qualifications be assessed in the last year of their period of employment or if they are assessed as not academically qualified, the university must immediately initiate dismissal proceedings in accordance with the collective agreement rules.

Salary and terms of employment
