At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Medicine, Aalborg University, a position as assistant professor in Orthopaedic Engineering is available for appointment as of November 1st, 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is part-time (20% / 7,4 hours per week) and is available for two years.
The Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Department of Clinical Medicine is seeking a part-time Assistant Professor in Orthopedic Engineering, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative translational research at the intersection of engineering and orthopedic science. This position is embedded within a vibrant, interdisciplinary research group where engineers and clinicians work collaboratively to tackle complex orthopedic problems. The group leverages state-of-the-art technologies, to develop patient-centered solutions that bridge the gap between clinical needs and technical innovation. The successful candidate will contribute to this dynamic environment, helping translate engineering advances into clinical settings.
Your work tasks
As an Assistant Professor in Orthopedic Engineering, you will contribute to the department’s mission by advancing translational research at the intersection of engineering and clinical medicine. You will lead the development of computer-assisted methods to support orthopedic applications, including diagnosis, surgical planning, and postoperative evaluation. You will also focus on advanced data analysis and develop computational tools and workflows to extract clinically meaningful insights.
In this role, you will collaborate closely with clinicians and technical experts, bridging disciplinary boundaries. You will also contribute to the academic environment through PhD supervision, research- based teaching, and the organization of seminars and symposia.
Your main responsibilities will include:
- Conducting research of high international quality, including publications in top-tier journals and active participation in academic networks.
- Providing scientific leadership and contributing to research projects in orthopedic engineering.
- Supporting the preparation of applications for external research funding.
- Co-supervising PhD students and supporting their academic development.
- Delivering seminars on relevant research topics for the department’s students and staff.
Your Competencies
You have a strong academic background in biomedical engineering or a closely related discipline, with a demonstrated ability to apply engineering approaches to clinically relevant problems. Your research record includes high-quality publications that reflect innovation and impact in the field.
You bring:
- Proven expertise in advanced imaging, 3D anatomical modeling, and clinical data analysis, with hands-on experience in tools such as Materialise Mimics and 3D Slicer.
- Proficiency in statistical analysis, data management, and data visualization, using tools such as R and Python.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, enabling effective collaboration with clinicians, technicians, and interdisciplinary academic teams.
- Motivation and ability to mentor early-career researchers, including PhD students, and contribute to the teaching mission through relevant lectures, preferably using problem-based learning (PBL) approaches.
- Interest or experience in securing external research funding through competitive grant applications.
- Fluency in English at an academic level and experience organizing seminars and academic symposia is considered an advantage.
Qualification requirements
Appointment as assistant professor requires academic qualifications at PhD level. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.
Who we are
The Department of Clinical Medicine delivers research-based teaching across all disciplines of the medical degree programme and conducts research within the clinical specialties. We collaborate closely with hospitals in the North Denmark Region and with general practice in both teaching and research.
Medical students receive instruction at multiple hospital locations and in general practice throughout the region.
The department is affiliated with approximately 40 research units, each representing a specific medical specialty, and is also associated with several other research centres and collaborative units. Most of the department’s staff hold concurrent clinical positions alongside their academic appointments.
